2.  Wire gauge is determined by the cross sectional area of either a solid
conductor or the sum of stranded conductors.  For instance, according to the
table quoted above:  16AWG wire could be either a solid conductor with a
diameter of 50.8 mils, or a stranded wire with a diameter of 59 mils (105 x
36AWG, or 26 x 30AWG) or 60 mils (7 x 24AWG).

 

The table quoted above gives you the various diameters; you would have to
calculate the cross sectional area yourself, taking into account skin effect
at high frequencies.

I keep running into conflicting AWG to metric conversion tables, including
some that talk about diameter instead of area, and it raises a couple of
questions:

1. Does anyone know of an OFFICIAL source that identifies the current-carrying
cross-sectional area for each size in the AWG system?  I'm not looking for
correlation to standard metric sizes (I know there isn't a 1:1 correlation)
just the official area of the standard AWG sizes.

2. Since stranding type affects the outer diameter of the copper (excluding
insulation), I've always avoided using metric diameter in favour of metric
area (square mm), and I've always assumed that the official measure (e.g. in
metric electrical codes around the world) uses square mm as well.  Is that
assumption right or are there codes that use diameter?
