I tried a refill kit. Made a mess and the cartridge didn't work. Ink on
hands for a week. Now I just use black cartridges and when the printer
acts up I buy another cheap one. Disposable you know- I don't bother
trying to fix much of anything anymore.

Sorry to hear your tail of troubles.  I bought a used printer over E-bay
with the same result.  Both cartridges were almost empty with a mess in
the bottom of the chassis.  Cost $50 to replace the cartridges.  That
was the cost difference in a demo (used unit) and a new one.  There are
plenty of rocker switches around Silicon Valley.  You need to measure
the hole size and head for Anchor, ACE, Surplus Solutions, or Halted.
