Not too much expensive. New / capable / cheap Pick any two! I sure hope they let you operate all that new equipment on used electrons! I need the frequency power meter to measure selectivelly 1KHz AM modulated signal, as per IEC 61000-4-3. I still don't see any need for a selective measurement capability. I thought the IEC requirement had you apply unmodulated RF to establish the correct field strength, then apply the modulation. A typical 500 Watt Class A power amplifier will have harmonic content of maybe -35 dBc, so a directional coupler, a couple of attenuators, and a broadband detector (bolometer power meter like an old HP-435) ought to do just fine. True, the SA can let you observe the modulation, but for levels, it's not absolutely needed. I searched for spectrum analyzers, but most of them starts its range at 9KHz. Those that operate at lower frequencies are much more expensive. I quoted Acterna PSM137 and wow..... $25 thousand dollars... too expensive! US$25k sounds like a bargain; you don't want to know what I paid for an HP-8572A System! You might try Anritsu or Rohde & Schwarz, but they are not cheap either. And if you try Hameg or Leader, then you may not get the capabilities you want. I suppose I just don't understand modern instructional techniques. It would seem to me that you would want the least automation necessary in order to stress the principles of Physics and the techniques of RF measurement. You only want to stress automation if you're trying to economically move product through a test lab. Sorry to have strayed into commenting on your mission; obviously I'm a troglodyte.
