Joel asked <When (if ever) is it mandatory to include an Emergency Stop Switch/Button in a machine's design?
Must an emergency stop switch be completly hardware, or can it function through the instrument's computer and software? What responce time should be expected? (2 part question) a) How long must the emergency switch be held before the function is recognized by the instrument (i.e. if I tap the switch and run, will it stop the machine). b) How long till the machine stops its action after the button is pressed?> For medical equipment, in the UK, particularly Linear Accelerators, it's well specified in BS EN 60601-2-1 clause 22.7.101. This is a very particular requirement, I rather think that general safety, as per Machinery Directive and Low Voltage Directive equipment, the requirement is much more open to individual rationale. Power presses, for instance, have very different emergency stop criteria to an electric toaster. Just a few pennies worth.
