Hello group,  I have enjoyed the various opinions & comments expressed
on this question. 
This near / far field issue is very complex and outside the confines of
this forum.
A simple "rule of thumb" is useful only for a quick estimation.
The point at which a wavefront becomes qusai-planer and coupled (far
field) can be roughly estimated to be a point somewhere at 8-10*lambda
if one is inclined to shoot from the hip.
A definitive answer becomes very complex due to the huge number of
variables involved.
The best treatment I have found is in Stutzman & Thiele's book "Antenna
Theory & Design" 2ed. (Wiley Press)
Prof.'s Stutzman & Thiele treatment on this subject is both imaginative
and thorough. 
Worth looking at.
