Why is taxi critical?

OOO - Own Opinions Only. Try www.jmwa.demon.co.uk and www.isce.org.uk There
are benefits from being irrational - just ask the square root of 2.

You, and a lot of other pilots, are moving lot's of people in big, ungainly
vehicles, with limited visibility and little awareness of those other
vehicles. Also, lot's of radio activity, making it easy to miss a clearance or
warning. Not the most dangerous phase of a flight, but still not a time to be
distracted with odd events.
