When I hear of modern exposure limits I think back to my earlier days.
When I was in the 9th grade of junior high school, I built a Tesla
coil powered by a pair of 811A transmitting tubes (you could read a
book by the light these tubes produced) and using a 3B28 xenon gas
rectifier tube. About 600 watts of RF was produced by the tubes and
the main coil produced fields where I was standing of many thousands
of Volts per meter electric field. I played in that field trying
different experiments for many many hours. The resonant frequency of
the coils was about 300 kHz.
The device was a lot of fun. I could heat up screwdriver blades by
holding them in the primary coil with secondary removed. If I put a
six inch piece of bare wire about a foot from the primary coil with
secondary installed. I could jump a 1/2 inch continuous spark from the
short wire to my finger! The corona at the top of the coil would form
into something of a spark directed towards an approaching finger and
connect at about 4 inches away. A fluorescent tube would light up full
brilliance a few feet from the coil with no wires attached. Killed
every TV picture on the block. I was not popular with my neighbors.
The Tesla coil won first place at the science fair.
I am still here, although my friends say the hours with the Tesla coil
explains some things about me. :-)
