Another carbon composition resistor anecdote : In the early days of UL1459, 2nd ed. (c. 1989), with the advent of overvoltage testing (or as CSA called it, fire hazard testing; now referred to as power-cross testing) on telecommunications ports, one manufacturer used GDTs and 5 W series limiting resistors, mounted 1/4 in. off the board. During one of the 30 min. tests (I can't remember which) the resistors eventually turned to white ash suspended between the axial leads.
The board also faired poorly and had large swaths of carbonized FR-4 surrounding nearly disintegrated glass mat and a gray-brown ash. One of the most dramatic set of results I saw.
