I have heard that carbon composition resistors are no longer allowed to be
used in commercial products because they burn when mistreated. I can
personally attest to that, but I keep a bunch around because they are
excellent resistors at high frequencies.
A few months ago, I was reminded of another use for those carbon comp
resistors. I was tuning up an old 300 Watt ham SSB transceiver when I was
rudely disturbed by a pair of small explosions. Two 1/2 Watt carbon comp
resistors had been placed between the transmitter's final tube cathode and
ground, intended to act as fuses to limit final current. It worked as
designed; all that was left were the resistor leads hanging in mid-air.
