But in many applications they can't be mistreated enough to burn. How do 
you burn up a 1 megohm? And they don't burn up a spectacularly as one 
old design of wirewound resistor, with the element wound on a glass 
fibre core. An overload sufficient to fuse the wire resulted in an arc 
in the molten glass. Very bright bluish light; very high temperature.
