Hi all, Until very recently, Australian regulations for cell phones included a requirement concerning the potential risk of ignition from a cell phone in potentially flammable atmospheres.
Although this requirement has now been dropped for cell phones, the subject has been raised again with respect to satellite phones because it is understood that satellite phones may very well being radiating higher power >from the antenna than can be expected from a cell phone. The Australian requirements for a cell phone was to comply with the limits set in a British Standard BS 6656:1991 or add a suitable warning in user documentation. I understand this standard was withdrawn and a Guide concerning these limits was published around 2002. My Question Can anyone in the group advise if there are or were any requirements in the UK concerning Satellite phones and potentially flammable atmospheres etc. In consideration of the likelihood of a satellite phone having greater power radiating levels from the antenna than a cell phone (I understand satellite phones can be up to around 5 watts), I am wondering if the UK has anything in place that addresses what power radiating levels or what practices are acceptable (user documentation warnings etc) for a satellite phone in the UL in the past and today. If there are none, I am presuming that the UK do not consider the operation of satellite phones to be of a potential risk of ignition in flammable atmospheres although I would find this surprising. I would also be interested in the history in the UK (i.e. what if anything was in place in the past and how/why was it changed). I think the USA (FCC) still has a need to place a warning in user documentation about operation of cell phones in potentially flammable atmospheres. If anyone has any advice about similar requirements for satellite phones in the USA also it would be of great help. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
