Everyone A crucial reason that ENs are required for basic standards is related to dates of withdrawal.
Where a basic standard is referenced as an undated reference from a product family or generic standard, a new edition of the basic standard would become effective immediately, were it not for the transition period in the EN basic standard. IEC standards do not have transition periods. If there is no product standard, you apply the relevant Generic standard, which will refer to EN 61000-4-2 for ESD test methods. > Maybe I am missing something but for CE Marking I thought only >standards in the OJ could be used. If that is correct where would the >EN version of 61000-4-2 ever be needed? I'm not sure I understand your point. There are two reasons why CENELEC produces EN versions of the IEC 61000-4 series: 1. CENELEC earns money from the sale of the ENs through the National Committee implementations; 2. It is POSSIBLE that the European National Committees might want Common Modifications to these IEC standards. Luckily, that hasn't happened yet, and there is almost no enthusiasm for the idea. -- OOO - Own Opinions Only.
