Technically, yes.  If you change the dimensions of the HCP you are deviating
>from the standard and cannot claim that you performed the testing according to
61000-4-2.

>From what I can understand of the theory, the coupling method of HCP indirect
discharges to the EUT is more of a radiated phenomenon.  As a result, the
wave-shape of the disturbance would be dependent on the physical setup of the
transmission system.  The transmission system in this case includes the HCP
and GRP.  Changing dimensions of the HCP or distance between the HCP and GRP
would change the transmission system.  There has been work to show that even
the relationship of where the ESD discharge is performed on the table edge in
relation to the location of the connection of the HCP to the GRP has an effect
(reference the first article below).

Dear members,

 

Could you please share your experience/comments in regard to the 1.6 m x 0.8 m
size of horizonal coupling plane (HCP) per 61000-4-2?  Need it to be the exact
size of 1.6 m x 0.8 m?

 

I would like to have a working bench works for both 61000-4-2 ESD and
61000-4-4 EFT/Burst tests.  With the size of 1.6 m x 0.8 m, I may have a
difficulty to place a generator, a capacitive coupling plane, and an EUT on
the table.  It would be great if I have 4' x 8' ground reference plane on top
of the table.  However, 61000-4-2 seems critical for the size of HCP: 

 

"If the EUT is too large to be located 0.1m minimum from all sides of the HCP,
an additional, identical HCP shall be used, placed 0.3 m from the first, with
the short sides adjacent."

 

The 61000-4-2 standard doesn't give me a choice to enlarge the HCP.
