Some years ago, at the AST Research OATS in Fountain Valley, CA,, I set up a
spare Bicon on a tripod a good distance further from a UUT than the test
antenna, and nulled out a local FM station. Instead of a selectable delay
line/phasing control, I used the "ambient" antenna's polarization and location
to get the right phase and amplitude, summing with the actual test signal
through attenuators used as a resistive splitter. It did work, and as far as
I could tell, the UUT signal amplitude (after correcting for the attenuators,)
was affected less than 1 dB.
Was working on a slotted line phase nulling setup later when I saw "the
handwriting on the wall" -- in Korean -- and left. I think the EMC lab (and
the BGF chamber!) was all sold off when Samsung pulled the plug, so if anyone
found a piece of hardware-store aluminum U-channel with a mutilated RG-213
coax center conductor jammed down in it , that was mine.

We took a test ride many years ago.
Interesting concept, difficult to implement.
The hardware was setup at a distance.
It basically assumed near equal distribution of ambient fields which were then
subtracted from actual readings of EUT on an OATS. The results being just
what you wanted to measure in the first place.
