Hi Gary, I would have thought that the VCP tested the sides and top..... Mind you, then I guess it would not be vertical any more.
Practically easier than moving the HCP though. I thought the HCP was intended to simulate a metal work surface, so unless the EUT hangs UNDER a metal work surface, maybe it doesn't apply. Cheers, Derek. -----Original Message----- From: McInturff, Gary <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Sent: Mon, Feb 7, 2011 4:47 pm Subject: Indirect ESD tests with the HCP above the EUT I ran across an old test report on some of our equipment from a test house which extended the test so that the HCP was placed above the EUT. I can’t find a requirement for this – at least in the 61000-4-2 +A2:2000 copy of the standard I have. 8.3.2.1 Discharge to …… <snip> At least 10 single discharges (in the most sensitive polarity) shall be applied at the front edge of each HCP opposite the centre point (if applicable) and the EUT and 0,1 from the front of the EUT. The long axis…… ( I interpret this as four discharge points since the EUT is to be placed 0,1 M from the front edge of the HCP as in figure 5 for table top equipment) The discharge electrode …….<snip> In addition, consideration should be given to exposing all sides of the EUT Well I suppose the top is a side but I’ve never seen anyone else test in this fashion and unless its rack mounted – not table top equipment most folks don’t stack equipment on top of their desktop equipment. Since a discharge knows no directivity I suppose a case could be made for the top – but it seems to be overkill since there is no discharge point above the equipment in normal cases. Does anyone else put a HCP above the equipment and test – am I once again missing the boat here?
