By now you must know if you issue that warning in the manual, some doofus will
try exactly that, and likely lubricate the tip of his finger with superglue.
Simplest thing to me is to drop a “windscreen” fuzzball down that hole, so
you can’t get close enough to the microphone housing to create an arc. Or
maybe put a little drop-in collar that reduces the diameter beyond probe
access size (which should then be maybe beyond 95 percentile doofus size too.

 

Or, you could say that insertion of a finger into the mike hole activates the
emergency lock-up feature.

I have a dictation machine with plastic enclosure. With EN55024 as the driving
standard it calls out 4kV contact discharge. The round tip will fit inside of
the microphone opening and when it is pushed into the opening for about ½
inch it can discharge to the microphone enough that a discharge arcs to the
microphone body the codex locks up. Not a good thing for criteria B since it
requires the USB device to be plugged in and out to reset the power and clear
the error. The standard says fix it and I know how to do that – its part or
tooling costs – but my question is should I fix it? It just isn’t rational
in my mind to actually use this as a test point it certainly isn’t going to
occur during normal use and I just have trouble spending the money to protect
against someone putting his finger down the opening (yes it will fit). They
have to actively want to do that. 

 

Performance Criterion B

 

After the test, the equipment shall continue to operate as intended without
operator intervention. No dgradation of perfomrance or loss of function is
allowed, after the application of the phenomena below a PERFORMANCE LEVEL
SPECIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURE, when th equipment is used as intended. The
peformance level may be replaced by a permissible loss of performance.

 

This is a surface problem you have to stick your finger very deeply into the
opening and since jamming your finger up to the first knuckle into the
micophone opening pretty much prevents you from using the equipment as
intended. Can the manual simply be updated to say don’t stick your finger in
here or you’ll lock up the recording handset?

 

I’m not trying to avoid a quality product or anything like that I just
don’t want to put money to cure something that isn’t going to happen. Like
I said I know how to fix it and I will fix it if I really need to, it’s a
small tooling fix and/or a couple of components on the microphone lines.
I’ve already tested the fix and it works – just don’t want to do it.
