Thought it would be interesting to review what we have recommended a grad student acquire. I hope he has a good library. I brings up the problem of trying to make the right moral decisions. I assume anyone writing safety related software will start with this.

For software, consider especially parts 1 and 3. Machinery-specific (electrical/electronic only): IEC 62061 [derived from IEC 61508] Machinery-specific (all technologies: lectrical/pneumatic/hydraulic/mechanical) ISO 13849-1 and -2 (There are many other standards based on/derived from IEC 61508.)
