Seems to me that expanded aluminum mesh is not too expensive. Might be a 
bit hard to find it in wide widths, though.

What about wire netting/wire mesh? I suppose the normal steel wire stuff 
would have too much resistance, but, at much higher cost, you can get 
mesh in other metals.

I think hinges would not work well after a while.
