All,
We started out years ago with a purchased EMC test program but there were few pros and many cons, such as high costs ($15K US), many bugs, limitations, and a lot of man-hours required to setup the software to do what you wanted. After years of frustration, be changed gears and started writing our own software in Labview but this is not without its issues. I would hope by now the new canned EMC test software would be a lot better. Maybe someone can give specific details about how these new programs work. E.G.: What test methods are supported? Substitution Method? Level On Forward Power? Level on Field Probe? Does the software support the Calibration tests? Unified Field? Both methods called out in the standard? Does the software support Field Probe Positioners? (we have one and it is sweet) During testing, can you change the volt/per/meter on the fly? Can you simply change the modulation method used? Does it have troubleshoot modes? Step forward, backward, change power level, go to specific frequency, change step rate and size on the fly? If some of the new software has made huge improvements over the years, maybe it would be something to look at even if you are a lab that have in the past written your own software. Something to think about. ONE LAST Question: How do YOU perform Radiated Immunity Test? What test method do you use? Our software levels on forward power at each frequency, then turns on the modulation. The forward power is calculated from a 16 point calibration test ran at 18V/m. Any power level between 1 and 10V/m is calculated and leveled at each frequency on the fly during the test. Is this how most labs perform this test or do they use the old substitution method or loop on field probe? Does canned test software normally support all the different test methods? First off... a bias warning.... I have a history with Teseq's C3 software. OTOH, I have written and used EMC software for about 30 years now. So, knowing most packages out there, I still feel Teseq's C3 is the leader, especially the immunity package. Not only is it compliant to the latest standards, but it's a standardized package. What this means is that a problem fixed in an installation somewhere gets fixed in yours automatically next release. It's released consistently to add features, stay current and yep, fix the odd bug. C3 was written by Software writers under guidance from many EMC engineers and not EMC engineers playing software writer. There is a big difference. For those that like to write their own code, you have the flexibility to write your own test methods. A very neat feature is an area where you can easily interface with what ever is being tested for closed loop testing. While not formally announced by the factory, a complete rewrite of the emissions and immunity packages called C5 should be released early next year. For some reason C4 is being skipped :-). If you have specific engineering questions feel free to ask me off list.
