I am asked to purchase an isolation transformer to protect the EMI
receiver from smoke due to the design of the device under test (230V
AC). A quick Google search returned with too many choices to choose.
You need a 'safety isolation transformer' which has better insulation
than an 'isolation transformer'. There is probably no significant
difference between those of reputable manufacturers, but I don't know
who are the US ones.
I am also thinking to use this isolation transformer for AC power line
conducted emission outside of a shielded room.
Safety isolation transformers tend to be of laminated core construction,
with one winding on each of two 'limbs' or one and two halves on three
limbs. These do have an external magnetic field, which may or may not be
of concern to you. Toroidal transformers have much lower external
fields, but whether you can get one that is a safety isolation
transformer, I don't know.
