Richard, I once had an HP spectrum analyzer than had a dim screen after 10+ years of operation. Moving the display centering to use other parts of the phospher didn't help.
I then removed the display glass and found a thin, even, layer of dust on the CRT. Thank you, electrostatic precipitation. Cleaning the CRT (and display glass) made the display look like new.
