I have Y14.44-2008, it's also primarily general, similar to IEC 81346-1. It refers to IEEE 315 sec 22. I'm assuming it would be primarily electrical component designators. I'm looking for something similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reference_designator that includes pneumatic/hydraulic components. Stuff you would expect to find on pneumatic or hydraulic schematic. I guess they don't teach that in mechanical engineering. Y14.44-2008 says they don't typically assign reference designators to mechanical components unless they are associated with electrical components. I'm not looking for them for gears/shafts/pulleys on assembly drawings but I'd expect to see them on a pneumatic or hydraulic schematic (pumps, regulators, valves, actuators, etc)
