Insulated wires, like any other component, must be used within their ratings. Voltage, temperature, ampacity, etc. And, if the equipment is to be certified, the wire must be certified.
These days, most wire is surface printed with its ratings and certifications. A typical PVC wire that is used in 60950 products is UL Style 1007 or 1028.
