No, I’d not go that far. I’ll blame the formal distinctions on Noah Webster and 
his founding of Webster’s American English Dictionary in 1828. Neither is 
wrong. Just different. As a Canuck, we speak and write a mix, but we like to 
keep the ‘u’ in some words, but go to the US spellings of others, like 
aluminum, vs. aluminium. Who knows what the rationale is. Not me, I’m just an 
engineer. Now pass me that wrench / spanner. Ya know what I mean!
