Hi Frank,

If you’re reading S2/S8 I’m guessing you’re in the semiconductor manufacturing
equipment SME industry like I am. Welcome. You might want to see if our
employeer will send you to the SEMI Standards face to face meetings at their
Milpitas HQ April 1-5. You’ll meet a lot of SME EHS peers there and have an
opportunity to see S2 and S8 ‘from the inside’ (perhaps not always the best
point of view).

The number of EU regulations relevant to SME can vary greatly depending on
technologies embedded in the equipment. Look out for pressure vessels,
intentional transmitters (RF tag readers, Bluetooth mice and keyboards),
processes that might occur in intentional explosive atmospheres.

Definitely also read through the EU Commission’s guide to the machinery
directive and the ‘blue guide’ for CE marking.

These things are ever-moving targets. I’ve been working in EU product
compliance (and others) since ’95, and I’m still catching up. That’s probably
why it’s become a career rather than a task.

Cheers,

If you will be working on CE marked machinery then review the requirements for
the technical file in the Machinery Directive. Also review requirements in
the Low Voltage Directive whether machinery or not.

Subject: [PSES] Intro to Safety

Hi Compliance Peers,
I'm fairly new to compliance, with 4-5 years EMC experience on ITE products for
Americas, Europe, Asia, and some Nebs understanding.
Recently began a new opportunity, which encompasses EMC and Product Safety for
automation.
Only begun reading SEMI S2/S8, and IEC 61010-1.
My questions are:

  1. Additional standards I should learn?
  2. Besides EMC and Safety testing testing what other documents is needed for
safety, ie. critical component list?
  3. How long does the whole process take?
Any help would be great.

-Frank
