you won't be happy running like that.  it will be very slow.

be sure your CD is good.  i've been doing several ubuntu installs
lately, and had trouble with at least two different CDs that i had
burned.  is there an existing operating system on your hard disk
that ubuntu is trying to preserve?  i had an apparent hang last night
while it was supposedly trying to compress my windows partition, but
it actually wasn't doing anything at all -- i restarted the install,
and everything worked fine.  don't know what changed.

can you install anything else on the hard drive?  (i.e., is it really
an ubuntu problem?)

in the end, i think you need to ask for help in an ubuntu support forum,
rather than here.
