If your BIOS is set to boot from the hard disk first you may need to go in and 
change the boot order so that you can use the CD.
Given that you can pick up small disks for not a lot. I'd leave the current 
hard disk alone, and replace it with a new one to play with Linux. At least 
then you know you can 'recover' simply by plugging the old one back in :)
