Hey Kirk,

EMC is actually a back burner project for me right now. I have a large
contouring router/mill and am running acromill on it. Too busy to change
that over right now but I'd like to have a gameplan w/emc when/if my control
card craps out and I'd like to go to 5-axis at some point with that machine.

I need linux to run some of my cad/cam/engineering apps that are windows
programs. I am using my pc at home to test out linux as I have zero
experience with it.....however, I'm tired of windows and not happy with the
direction they are heading and want to get away from it.....but I need to be
able to run my windows software.

I hope you don't mind me asking why you need Windows. I have Rutex servo
amps that use Windows tuning software, but I plug in a spare Windows
boot hard drive for that.

I wonder, is there a hidden dialog box needing attention? The only Ubuntu
password I use is the normal user password, even to become root. (I use
"sudo su -" in a terminal to become root, by the way.) Can you get to
another terminal by Control-Alt-F2, log in and "ps ax" to see what the
computer is trying to do?

I would put in a vote to suggest that you keep your EMC computer as lean
as possible. For me, it helps me stay focused on what's really
important. I have a couple EMC only computers, so that I can break one
and still have one to use.

Good luck.
