You probably know this already but I'll mention it anyway. It's 
important to know that EXT2 or EXT3 partition formats are not suitable 
for flash memory because they'll wear them out too fast. The following

For what you are trying to do, JFFS and JFFS2 file systems for 
partitioning are needed. I would use one of two ways to approach this 
issue.
You could USB for the fixed portion of OS and programs and use a hard 
drive for files and as a temporary R/W area. Small "laptop size" drive 
would be OK.

If you don't want to have hard drive in the system at all, then two USB 
sticks would be better IMO. One for the fixed portion of the OS, and one 
for the data, i.e. files you change or move from one system to another. 
That way you could setup a system where you keep different "jobs" on 
different USB keys without a need for reboot each time.
