This type of conversion should be doable; but it will be a big job.

Every little thing must be designed, tested, and tested again. With a little 
machine, a motor will stall when you hit a stop. With a machine this size, 
things will break.

Expect your machine to be out of service for a long time during the 
conversion.

Do you own an oscilliscope and know how to use it? Can you read a ladder 
diagram?

I don't mean to scare you away. There are lots of people here who can help 
you.

You will find it a formidable job, but, in my opinion, a worthwhile one.
