If this is a Linux machine, the best thing to do is put denyhosts on it. I used to get a thousand or more breaking attempts a day. Denyhosts is a python script that checks the log file for failed logins, and when it sees (n) failures within an hour from the same IP, it puts them in the hosts.deny list for two weeks. This has drastically cut down on the number of attempts, and makes it very unlikely anyone will get lucky.
