>>>Bit of problem there Gene, it's the Live CD version, so can't edit the
file. I don't want to risk writing configuration files over a working
Windows/Mach3 machine which I was testing on. The PC is 3.2GHz AMD with
2Gb of RAM so really shouldn't be slow.>>>>

Steve,

Installing the Ubuntu version of EMC2 from the live CD shouldn't cause any
problems at all with the windoze installation. I have just added a new linux
install from the Ubuntu 8.04 version of the live CD to a desktop PC and a
laptop with no ill effects at all. I would recommend that you choose the
'manual' partitioning method during the install but all you need to do,
assuming you have some space left on your hard drive(s), is shrink the windoze
partition a bit and add in a 400Mb Swap partition and a 4GB Ext3 root (/)
partition. The installation program guides you through it and you'll be
surprised how simple it is. An installed version runs far, far quicker than the
CD and maybe you will find that the shorter time at bootup and closedown
actually make you start to like Linux. You certainly won't have any problem
finding your way around the many apps. that install automatically and most
things can be achieved without ever going near a command line these days. I
started playin
g around with EMC and Linux way back when both were pretty new and it was a
nerdy environment then - I was totally lost and people like Ray had to hold my
hand all the way - nowadays, since I came back to it a year or so ago, its a
doddle! (although I still get lost when I try to push the envelope and do
things I'm not really up to...)
