You could enter in MDI a tiny piece of G-code to do the Z steps, 
and execute that in MDI mode each time you need to do that.  Or, 
you could write that as a G-code file, and hit R for every step.
Either way, this would shut off the spindle, so you'd want a 
manual spindle override setup, if your spindle is 
computer-controlled.  Switching between continuous and 
incremental jog can be done with the C and I keys, much easier 
than using the mouse.  It keeps the last incremental setting if 
you go back and forth with C and I.
