Why, pray tell, do you not just put the kubuntu box on line?  Things are SO 
much easier when it has a network connection, and its hundreds of times safer 
to connect to the net than your winderz box is.  Adept or Synaptic is 
generally pre-configured and the first thing you will want to do is let it 
update itself with all the new versions of whats installed and any security 
updates there may be.  Which could take some time just for that, but you'll 
be a security tight and bug free as anyone else then.
