My shop is too far away for wi-fi, so there is a hunk of cat-5 strung across the back yard for about the last 4 or 5 years. I figured it was good for about a year out in the weather, but its still going nominally well. The cable is about 100 feet long with the last 50 swinging in the wind. With alu siding on this house, I don't see much except my router with a sniffer till I walk out the door, then it lights up like a Christmas tree. > What type do you have? You could try plugging it in, and see if >NetworkManager will configure it for you. My home net is all on my side of a dd-wrt router running on an old x86 box with 2 LAN nics, and an Aetheros 802-11 54mbs card. But its range won't let me hook up the laptop 30 feet away, so while I have wi-fi bragging rights, its not much use otherwise. DD-WRT feeds an 8 port switch & all the rest of the boxes scattered around here are plugged into it. As for network manager, I'm the old school, (exclusively linux since '98) and it gets disabled so I can use fixed local (192.168.x.x) addressing and valid host & resolv.conf files. Much, much simpler in the long run. -- Cheers, Gene "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
