I just installed the Ubuntu 8.04/EMC ISO on a Dell Optiplex GX150 with the i810 chipset, and have the same problem with the lines appearing when an openGL app runs, like glxgears or Axis. The /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is practically empty, now. Have you got a sample syntax for how to specify the vesa driver?
