Hi,

This is my first post to the list.
I want to cnc something. I have not decided if it is going to be a
lathe or mill though I'm leaning toward the mill. Likely a X3 type of
machine. I don't think I want to CNC my bridgeport or clausing
lathe.

Years ago I used some Galil DMC720 controls to make machines to put
hot melt on package trays before turning the edges.

I also used IMC 110 controls and another IMC , I think the 4xxx with
GML to make machines to fly srim dispensing heads into forming
presses.

Each time I used servo motors instead of steppers. I understand how
steppers make things much simpler, if you don't lose step, you can
just keep track of steps.

I personally don't like open loop. I know you can use steppers and
encoders but I don't see the benefit there over servo motors.

If I'm not totally off track, I understand EMC can take encoder
feedback. What boards are typically used? What drives are usually
used in servo apps?

I have a lot of questions but I'll stop there.

Currently I repair cnc equipment and other automation. I know a bit
about a lot of things and know I don't know enough about much.

Wes
