I have found these to be convenient.

Because they are focussed-beam sensors there is no need for the flag
to be especially far from the surface. For example, this is my lathe
longitudinal limit switch which has been 100% reliable and repeatable
to .05mm so far.

I use the same thing for my spindle encoder, and the target is just
inkjet printed on paper and wrapped round the spindle. The signal is
good, but I seem to have messed up the electronics and have cross-talk
between channels, which needs sorting out.
