Steve - Thanks for your patience with me, I saw a thread with minimal replies and minimal progress so thought I'd jump in. I was actually experiencing some insomnia and it appears I am again tonight...Sorry I didn't look at the change logs and bug reports.
As for trying the newer packages for Jaunty or Karmic, you're probably Ok to reassign the dependencies and use those packages. As always I'd recommend a back up of critical information, but undoing the change if it doesn't work should be rather straight forward. Try and contact the authors/developers of the driver through those pages and see what they have to say. My thought is even with the evolvement of the Kernel, and the realtime kernel we use for EMC, that the HID sub-system hasn't been overhauled so much as to break the driver migration, But, as with anything, exercise caution.
