Grub is a possibility. I did not consider so far that Grub might be the culpit. 
Does ubuntu use a special flavour / version of grub?

I'll cross check that with the various distros I have meanwhile on my 
c&t69000er box, would be too good to have it all up.

Might take some time, but I'll be back.
