The M on the end specifies the package.  The M (at least from Texas 
Instruments)
means SOIC package, a surface-mount device.  You may not even want that
part.  The 3486N from National Semiconductor is an 8-pit DIP which may be
easier to work with.  I see that Digi-Key doesn't stock the DIP version, 
however.
