You might be able to buy a complete R8 minimill for less than a replacement spindle. The X-2 and its many clone machines has a very easily removed "block" spindle housing that bolts on to the dovetail Z slide piece. You want to get rid of the darn plastic gears, of course. This would be very easy to re-use in some sort of machine spindle appication.
