Hi Aram,

ER series collets make a good system. ER20 would allow you to go from 1
mm or so to .500 inch in overlapping collets. I use ER20's on my cinci
and they work just fine.

ER20's are small enough so you could turn down the shaft just behind the
collet section and use smaller bearings therefore giving you some chance
of increased bearing life. At wood routing speeds bearings are not going
to have long life anyway. Keeping the diameter small helps.

You might want to pick up some of the Koyo bearing literature at your
local McGuire Bearing store ( 943 Southeast Market Street, Portland ).
It contains useful stuff on spindle bearing designs.

If you want something 'quick and 'dirty" 2 HP Hitachi routers are
available with 0.25 and .5 collets for just over $100.

I have one mounted below the spindle on my Mazak and it is giving good
service but I don't expect long life out of the bearings.

Being the experimental type you might check out hydrostatic bearings
using water as the lube. A real pain to fabricate but I think the
bearing life might make up for it. Maybe someone with experience will
post.

Good luck with your endeavor.
