Thanks for all the advice.  I did pretty much what you recommended.  I 
got a 40 conductor ribbon cable and trimmed it down to 25 conductors and 
crimped a 26 pin female socket into one end and a male db25 connector 
onto the other end.  I originally tried a premade  female db25 ribbon 
cable and used a 6 foot male to male db25 cable to connect it to the 
computer but the mesa card wouldn't work with it.

Got it hooked up and controlling some steppers and reading some encoders 
on a test bench.
