Peter,

best thing you can do is download the Ubuntu EMC system from 
http://www.linuxcnc.org/content/view/2/4/lang,english/
that Ubuntu CD well help you through most, if not all of the burden of  
installing software that works.

Also what helps is join us on the EMC channel on freenode.org, lot's  
of people there daily,
you can ask your questions on EMC, I also believe somebody already is  
controlling a EDM machine with Linux,
but I am not sure if he hangs out on the channel.
