The IDE->SATA adapter is the most likely culprit.  I'd try another one 
before hammering the drive.

Note that an image copy is unlikely to boot, since the GRUB config 
thinks it's supposed to boot from HD0, not SD0.

I think you will be best off doing a fresh install to a SATA drive, and 
then copying the files off the IDE drive using an external USB->IDE adapter.
