Well, also you have to trust the insulation of the motor.  Assuming a 
brush motor, that can be compromised
by dust from the brushes.  If a brushless motor, there is a lot less to 
go wrong.  But, still, making sure the
safety earth is quite well done is a good idea.  Don't assume a single 
earth connection to the machine base
is sufficient, either, as the well-oiled slideways can be non-conductive.
