Dave, could You, please, specify, what is Your intended goal?
Since Dave is building machines for other clients, I understand that
"maintenance" in this case is connecting to a particular Linux PC just
in case some trouble emerge. And that might need not only control over
EMC2, but control over all the PC - to be able to open and check
config files, g-code files or anything else.
Target PC does not necessarily need to be connected to LAN and served
by DSL, 3G mobile network speeds would be totally sufficient.

I have video surveilance in my workshop and the only option for
internet connection there is mobile broadband. So I have 3G router
with LAN port and I also have fixed IP for that SIM card. I do not
know, if fixed IP is mandatory, but mobile network is totally suitable
for these things. I can connect remotely to DVR (which is running some
special sort of Linux actually) and check, what is going on at the
premises any time.
