Peter, when specifying house wiring to my electriciain, I ensured that in the kitchen, only the the counter-top outlets were in the ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) circuit. The refrigerator's outlet was explicitly excluded, to avoid the problem that you have experienced. And yes, probably every country can add to the name confusion.
