I see.  You could use a hub to shaft adapter off the end of that 
ballscrew and use a smaller diameter encoder disk.. just thinking.
I have seen a lot of small timing belt drives off ballscrew shafts 
leading to shaft encoders at a 1:1 ratio.  I have three setups like that 
on my lathe.

Glass disks are sexy, but they don't like shock very well.
